about
I wrote Adrift in the early days of the pandemic. Like most people, I became very introspective - most likely caused by sudden isolation. During those strange, new times, I took almost daily trips to the shore where the water has always centered me. It was there that the song was born. I imagined my heart afloat, at the mercy of the tides and weather conditions. Rolling gently on the soft waves and tossed about in violent squall. It was in the recording process, however, that the song really came to life through an open and extremely collaborative effort with my producer, Erin Costelo. A trombone evoking the nautical feeling, a cello keeping things flowing with the additional colourful elements that could be whales or wind or gulls. The bass and percussion accentuating the relentless rhythm of the ocean’s pull. The deliberate choice to have the vocals front and center accentuates the storytelling in an authentic and unadorned way. It has been a treat to watch this song come into its own, buoying my heart along with it.
lyrics
Adrift
Maureen Trainor
I’ve been staring at the ocean
While it sets its sights on me
My heart adrift without direction
Salt-sprayed rapture on the sea
And as it reaches the horizon
Distanced from my roots on shore
I’m wishing all good things to my heart
In case we part forevermore
Unanchored
At the whim of the moon and the tides
My heart abides
My heart abides
Fathoms deeper is the regret
Of never pushing off before
Always too concerned with safety
Tethered tightly to the moor
But I’ll let go of false presumptions
I’ll embrace the rolling swell
While my heart encounters newness
And my mind escapes its hell
Unanchored
At the whim of the moon and the tides
My heart abides
My heart
My enamoured heart is small
Tossed about in violent squall
Unanchored
At the whim of the moon and the tides
Unanchored
At the whim of the moon and the tides
My heart abides
My heart abides
